Continuing from Markus's blog, I do have a small issue though. I set two crontabs to get images from xericdesigns at even hours, and from apollo at odd ones. The low-res xericdesigns looks like this: The high-res from apollo, like this: I like the low-res better :·) I tried converting the hi-res to low, looks the same. I wonder how xericdesigns do it.

Hey Don,
this is because of the original satellite images used. There's different wavelengths of infrared emissions of the clouds creating different results (mainly depending on the height and the amount of water contained within the cloud) while capturing these images, which is why different services offer different clouds images. Another factor is the contrast of the image. Clouds images are black and white only, while the black part becomes transparent and only the white parts will be used as overlay. So playing with the contrast (maybe by using imagemagick) might help to make those two match better.
Nothetheless I'll take a look into the free images proposed by Phyllinux in the blogs comments and will implement them at some point in the future. Atm I simply don't have the time for it, unfortunately, cause I have to deal with a pile of personal shit like handling the estate of my dad who died couple of weeks ago (which is a fulltime job over here in Germoney), keeping up with my company going through the roof and the like.
Best Markus

Hey Markus, sorry about your dad. And - obviously - good to see you here.
I was looking at mogrify, which would probably do it... if I knew anything about graphics - which I don't.
Let's just hope the free images continue to work.

So far so good. The (crontabbed) script I run to get the cloud and convert the image: #!/bin/bash cd ~/.xplanetFX/base/ wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/apollo-ng/cloudmap/master/global.jpg sleep 1 convert global.jpg -evaluate Pow 2.2 -blur 0x5 ctmp.jpg sleep 1 convert ctmp.jpg -resize 2048x1024 clouds.jpg sleep 1 cp ./clouds.jpg ~/.xplanetFX/cache/
I added the sleeps just in case the was some disk writing delay... or something. They're probably not necessary. If I succeed in making the image any better, I'll let you know. For the moment, it looks like this:

Note: if convert doesn't work, you may not have imagemagick (just install it) or an older version (use magick instead of convert. I suggest running the script in a terminal before crontabbing it

Still. The converted apollo clouds look like this: The xericdesigns ones, like this:
Maybe I just overdid the blur a bit in the conversion, but still... I mean, much better, but not quite there. Opinions?

Hey Don, yes, seems like you've overdone blurriness, it's blurred at an approx. 5 pixel radius, then resized by approx. 50%, which results in >2px blur in the final source image. Apart from that you can write all commands in a single call to imagemagick. All instructions are applied in the order set on the the command line: cd ~/.xplanetFX/base/ wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/apollo-ng/cloudmap/master/global.jpg convert global.jpg -evaluate Pow 2.2 -blur 0x1.5 -resize 2048x1024 ../cache/clouds.jpg should work. Thanks. Last try I did was -blur 0x2 and it looked OK... I'll try 1.5 And the one-line convert, obviously.

This is with 1.5: Xeric: Apollo:
Not quite the same, but... good enough I'd say. Maybe even better, depending on how you look at it.
One thing about the script: You have to add rm global.jpg either at the beginning or at the end, or wget renames the downloaded image to global.jpg.1,2,3 and so on.

Now. It looks like "Who killed Dundee" is not going to be the next Sex Pistols hit. Clouds are back But it's still " in the balance". You may want to raise awareness for the fundraiser... I wrote to them to mention that they don't have a Paypal option and we don't like giving out CC numbers, I hope they'll consider it.

Oh well. They didn't consider it, the Receiving Station has closed, and the cloud images haven't been updated for almost two weeks now. I have been in contact with apollo-ng, they're very friendly, they might "look into alternatives".... eventually Let's hope for the best :·/

This youtube video goes over how to download cloud images directly from satellites. It is beyond my skillset and resources but may eventually spawn a completely opensource live cloud service in proper plate-carree format. youtu.be/tbXBEd7PL9APerhaps this could be proposed as a student managed university project somewhere.
